Hi,
Less than 8 weeks ago I spoke to my GP about some pain in my left ovary area that I'd had for about 6-8 weeks and varied between a dull ache and a severe pain that made me have to stop what I was going and sit down. My GP was amazing and because I'd had a dermoid cyst removed 21 years ago and compared the pain to that she did a referral for an ultrasound. I had ultrasounds (abdominal and internal) on 23rd July which found a large mass 17cm x 12cm x 9cm. The sonographer said she could not be sure it was dermoid and would do the report for my GP and for me to call my GP the next morning. I was referred as urgent but not in the two week suspected cancer category. I saw the consultant gynaecologist at the hospital on 12th August who took bloods for tumour markers and said he was referring my case straight to the Malignant MDT to be discussed at their next meeting on 19th August. He said until they can confirm what it is, it will be treated as suspected cancer. Yesterday, someone from the MRI department called me and said there was a letter in the post with a date for an MRI on 9th September but he'd been called by MDT and told it needed to be sooner than that - so it's now on 3rd September. I can't sleep or function with the worry about all of this. I've been told that the mass needs to be removed regardless of whether it is cancerous or not and that it will be in weeks not months. In a way everything has happened so quickly, in other ways, I feel like my life has just been on hold since the scans - every day I'm just waiting for the next thing and it seems like forever. I'm an awful overthinker - how long after the MDT are most people contacted? I really hope it will be Monday.
I have named my mass Donald - I'm not overly political, but I do know I want him out!
Thanks for reading x
Hello , I don’t belong to the ovarian group I have a different cancer (metastatic melanoma) but recognised your feeling of waiting and how time seems to simultaneously speed up and slow down at the same time if that’s possible ! There was a similar discussion in Cancer chat forumI saw this morning about the same agony of waiting.
I do hope you did hear yesterday and that plans are progressing for ‘Donald’s’ removal. I hope that some of the members from this group join in to help with your wait and that you share any results you get.
Take care
Take care KT
I had my MRI on Thursday 3rd and am now waiting for the results of this - really hoping to hear this Thursday - MDT meeting is Wednesday. I’m pottering around at home whilst I wait - I am signed off work due to the pain and side effects from the painkillers that I was given by A&E ten days ago. Luckily my other half works from home so I haven’t been home alone and driving myself completely insane with my thoughts! Do you have a date for your scan ? The waiting is honestly the worst thing.
Hi Sharon
One of my friends suggested I go private. Apart from the cost, I don’t think it’s all that much quicker. It’s still NHS staff working there and they are still human and delays happen. I had to wait 2 weeks for results of a private MRI a few years ago.
I called radiology on Friday and they said they had received the referral of the 28th of August and appointment would be soon. The GP said he had referred urgently.
It’s also a postcode lottery.
I’m in Scotland. Are you in England?
Fingers crossed for you that the results come on Thursday.
Hi Gail,
have you had the date through now for your MRI? I had my MRI on 3rd and phone call from the consultant on Friday. The MRI was inconclusive - because although there are some traits of it being a dermoid cyst, it is not enough to rule out it being something nastier. The MDT have requested a CT scan on my chest, abdomen and pelvis to check that there is nothing else that has spread either from or to the ovary mass. After that has been done, my care will transfer to St. Michael’s and I will meet with them to discuss the findings of the CT scan and also to get a date for the surgery. That meeting is planned to be on Wednesday 23rd September. They plan to remove the ovary and Fallopian tube via open surgery rather than keyhole. They want to do that as soon as possible after the appointment as they can. Once my care is transferred to St. Michael’s I will have a nurse practitioner allocated to me for any questions etc. Don’t really know how I feel! Like Dr Bond said, I’m not ringing to tell you it’s definitely something nasty, but it still can’t be ruled out at this stage. Either way, Donald is going to be coming out soon. I don’t think we’ll know for sure now until after the biopsy when it’s removed. I am in Bristol. Now waiting for a date for my CT.
Take care,
Sharon
Hopefully in this case Donald will be benign.
I had an abdominal ultrasound which appeared clear except for some fluid at back of uterus, which is usually normal and common but sometimes not.
Still waiting on gynae appt.
The period pain I feel and the bloating and weeing are all explainable by other things - at least I need to find someone who can confirm that it is normal to have period pain every day, all the the time during peri menopause.
Ihope all goes well for you Sharon
