Hi,
My mother has just been diagnosed with primary peritoneal cancer - but we understand treatment is very similar to ovarian, and this group seems to be more active, so hope OK to post here.
I have so many questions, but the main one is does anyone have experience of chemo in someone of her age? She's a bit frail, but no more than you'd expect at her age and otherwise in good health. She has been told that the cancer if left untreated is likely to progress (i.e. more symptoms) in 'a small number of months', and that whilst its incurable, some success in delaying is seen from carboplatin. There's a long back-story here about how ridiculously hard it has been to even get a consultation (partly due to covid-19, but some serious failure of NHS process can't be ignored) - but that's for another day.
My mother's view is that she wants to try chemo - which I support, her rationale being it's better than doing nothing - although we're aware of the various risks & side effects. All this is from reading & researching though - it would be really good to hear from real people who've been through this, any views, good / bad / otherwise. It's a rock & a hard place decision, and of course ultimately it is hers to make and I'll support all the way, but the more we know the better prepared we can be.
Thanks for reading.
Hello,
So sorry that your mother has been diagnosed at her age,but if chemo has been suggested, then they must presumably think that she is fit enough. The other thing is if she is fit in other ways and she is confident about it let her have it.
I was 70 when I was diagnosed with womb and fallopian tube cancer,so had a hysterectomy followed by chemo. It is doable & I found drinking at least two litres of water a day while on the treatment helps. All will be explained prior to treatment and there are other drugs to help with side effects.
Recently it has been discovered that I have a recurrence which this time is in the peritoneal area,so I am probably going to have chemo again. I am now 75years of age. So what I am trying to say is that I have had nearly five good years without any problems. If it gave your mother another few years and maybe longer then it would be well worth it.
Take care, & let us know how you get on. Georgette xx
HI Georgette,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, and sorry to hear you have a recurrence. I really hope you find the chemo as OK as it can be and that you get many more good years.
It's all very new to us, so your comments are much appreciated. I'm not sure Mum is necessarily confident - but certainly she's a fighter, and the alternative of doing nothing doesn't sit well - there would always be the "what if I had" question. She was originally told that she had cancer of unknown primary, that there was nothing to be done ' because of her age' and was discharged to palliative care only. Since then we've fought a bit of a battle to get a proper diagnosis and at least now the consultant is saying chemo is an option.- so it's just working out how best we support her through it. It's just helpful to hear that you found it bearable and saw some real benefits.
I'm very grateful to you - please let us know also how you get on. Thank you - Sue (must change my user name !). xx
Hi Sue,
So pleased to hear that you Mum managed to get a proper diagnosis in the end,as this is very important.
I am guessing your Mum is probably a determined lady & so long as she stays positive then I believe that is a great help..
My family thinks that I am very strong, but I am not really,it is all about positivity & determination, plus the fact that otherwise I am a fit person who has always had a good diet etc.
I will be think of you both & hope that all goes well.Keep in touch. As things progress I will let you know how I get on.
Take care, Georgettexx
