Hi all, i am newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I have been offered the debulking surgery but have chose to do 3 rounds of chemo first.

i started carbo and taxol last week and have since been hospitalised with faecal loading i walked into the hospital and left on a rollator due to the pains and legs giving way.

can anyone offer some experiences on the surgery and also if chemotherapy get any more manageable? Right now i feel that its not worth the pain and loss of identity. Does the power in your legs return after a period of time?

  • Hi,sorry to hear you are having such a tough time right now.  I had carboplatin and Pacitaxel and although there were a number of side affects I’m thankful I managed to get through it! I then had surgery followed by more chemo, just finishing Avastin then looks like more chemo so my fights not over! Speak to your Oncology team as they will be your experts and will know if the carboplatin isn’t suitable for you.  They are amazing people.

As hard as this is, do try to keep as positive as you can. I managed to exercise all the way through and found it really helped even though at times I was whacked!!

its hard to guide you as we are all different but use your support network as much as possible.  There are some truly amazing people on this site, all with different experiences.  In the meantime sending you well wishes and much strength to battle your way through each challenge.  Heart️

  • Hi Tilly,

I am exactly the same as you with Stage 3c ovarian cancer with the addition of uterine cancer stage 1.

My cancer was necrotic and I had ascites making me very poorly so I had the debulking surgery first.

I was diagnosed August 24 and had my first debulking operation in September 24. My uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, appendix, cervix, omentum and some peritoneum was removed. I recovered very well and my pain was well managed.

My second debulking surgery was in November 24 and this consisted of my peritoneum being fully removed, my liver and diaphragm scraped. This surgery was bigger and recovery took a bit longer. However my pain was still managed very well.

My post operative scan showed no evidence of disease.

I had 6 cycles of chemo (same as yours) then another scan which also showed no evidence of disease.

The debulking surgery saved my life so I would urge you to go ahead with it as soon as possible. I thought I was going to die but here I am in September 25 still in remission. I’m taking Niaparib chemo maintenance tablets and feel well.

Please stay hopeful, I wish you all the best in your cancer journey.

    Margie
