Hello I've had my appointment through for the 14th jan for full open hysterectomy
Appendectomy and Omentectony but it's telling me to report to the day case unit. I was told I would have to stay in for a few days ?I can't get through on phone there extremely busy has this happened to anyone eles will they really let me out the same day??
Hi Sophia78 and welcome to the group.
Have you got a CNS(cancer nurse specialist) you can call to clarify this, rather than the appointments line or day case unit? Or call your consultant’s secretary to check?
This is a major surgery, especially since it is open abdominal, so it’s hard to imagine that would be done as a day case, though you may have to report to the day case unit initially. It depends how things work at your hospital. I have had 2 major abdominal surgeries for gynaecological cancer, and one of them was planned for a hysterectomy. I was in hospital for 2 nights, and then 2 weeks for my larger surgery.
If you were having a laparoscopic hysterectomy, without anything else, then it can be possible to have this done and be out the same or next day, but I’ve not heard of same day discharge for open abdominal surgery. A friend had this surgery 2 weeks ago and was in for a week.
It may be an error on the letter, or it may be that you report to the day case unit but that’s not where you stay after your surgery is done. Try calling the nurse or secretary tomorrow so you can settle your mind, and I hope you can be reassured.

I hope everything goes well Sophia78 My partner couldn’t even find out where I was after one of my surgeries, so things do change sometimes. Hopefully you’ll get a call back to confirm everything but I’m sure you’ll be staying in after your op.

Oh that’s excellent news-I’m so glad you know now what’s happening. All the best for your surgery and recovery.

It’s most likely that you will be admitted through the day case unit then be moved to a longer stay ward ward post op . Don’t worry it means you’ll get admitted there straight away instead of waiting for a bed to become available on a particular ward on the day. (This is what happened to me ). It’s common now in a lot of surgical units . Good luck with your surgery and journey . I’ve been down the same path 6 years ago .. still here to tell the tale … chin up a nd best foot forward!
