Hi about to start chemotherapy, been offered PICC line , wondering about people experience? Pros and cons ? , thank you

  • Hi! I had a Picc line for several months without incident until a nurse accidentally dislodged it while cleaning it & I had to have it taken out. Mostly it’s pretty painless unless you pull it or knock it so you need to keep it either taped or bandaged to keep it in place. It needs regular flushing & cleaning around the insertion site but that’s done when you have chemo or blood tests on a regular basis. The most annoying thing for me was no swimming and mine was in place when we had our last hot summer two years ago! Showers are a bit of a pain as you need to keep it dry & the plastic sleeves that you buy are not very effective. It’s not painful to have put in or taken out & is much preferable  to having a nurse try many times to get a cannula in!! If you are concerned of people seeing it you can buy stretchy picc line covers on line in various colours. I now have a port in my chest which I was not offered initially as they were in short supply after Covid apparently. I much prefer this as it’s easier to live with as it can’t be pulled out & it’s flushed every four weeks when I have my bloods done. Having it put in is unpleasant as it’s more of a minor op but at least I can swim now and unless I look in the mirror I don’t know it’s there!

I hope this helps & you proceed swiftly with your treatment.

  • Thank you for replying, really helpful to hear your experience,  will have a think, great to hear you can go swimming again with a port.
