Stage 3 Ovarian and adverse reaction to Paclitaxel

I was diagnosed with Stage 3 (C) Ovarian cancer on 11 Jan. Have had one cycle of chemo (14 Feb) with just Carboplatin and all went OK. Some side effects days 6 & 7 (mainly extreme fatigue & constipation) and then stomach cramps and post-prandial hypotension on days 8 & 9. After that, got better and better. Then had 2nd chemo cycle this Tue (7 Mar). It was a bit of a disaster. They added Paclitaxel into the mix and I had a severe allergic reaction, nearly losing consciousness. They had to bring in two doctors (one from ICU) so they must have been pretty worried. Wondering what's next for me. Been reading some of your experiences and it seems Paclitaxel is problematic, and if so, why do oncologists choose it in preference over other drugs? Any ideas anyone?

  • Hi

i had exactly the same reaction, was ok on the first cycle, 2nd one  thought I was having  a heart attack- they stopped infusion and flushed saline through after a massive steroid dose - then they tried again really slowly- which was ok , but on the 3rd cycle it happened again, so they changed me to docetaxel and carbo which was fine - there is always a plan b - don’t loose faith- there are plenty of other options out there

Let us know how you get on

  • I had a reaction to the pre med for Taxol so I wasn't given it.  I'm actually not stage 4 but stage 5 which was downgraded to late stage 4.  I was given gabapentin on its own.  It was fine with the added benefit of being a speedy "run through". My problems were with my Hickman line which got infected and I got sepsis when I was neutropenic.  On the bright side after being given a 20% chance of living 2 years, that's 5 years ago and my hair thinned but did not fall out totally.  You might suggest just gabapentin.

  • That's encouraging; thanks Audigirl52! It's all so damned terrifying, though, isn't it? Just got to hope it all works. Thank you so much for responding and good luck with yours, Janet.

  • I had an allergic reaction to Taxol on my 3rd dose. Apparently it is very unusual for the reaction to wait until the 3rd time! Severe anaphylaxis within 30 seconds of the drip starting. It was so scary, but the nurses reacted immediately and got me sorted. I was switched to Abraxane, which is the same medicine, but in a different form? It has fewer side effects, but here in the US it is incredibly expensive, so you can only get it if you are allergic to Taxol.

  • When you say "Taxol" is that the same as "Paclitaxel" in the UK - do you know?

  • Hi yes- very confusing taxol  is paclitaxel !

  • Thank you. I had disregarded other people's comments about Taxol as I thought they were talking about a completely different drug! Good to know it's actually the same.

  • Sorry about that! Yes, same drug. Thanks for replying, Janet. :)
