Hi everyone, I am having surgery (laparotomy) next week to remove my ovaries. I have a small mass on one of them which may or may not be cancer. I've been told they will do a 'frozen section' during the surgery to find out if it's cancer and if it is they will do further biopsies of my lymph nodes and belly fat. Anyone else been through the same who can give me an idea what to expect? I live on my own so I'm wondering how I am going to manage when I come out of hospital.

  • Can’t say I can answer your question, but they found a 4cm mass on one of my ovaries recently so I’m eager to see what advice others offer you. Sending you big virtual hugs XX

  • Thank you - sending hugs back. Hope all works out well for you x

  • Hi, I've been told I have a 4cm unusual cyst on my ovary when I had an ultrasound at the beginning of June. I had an Mri on the 4 July and I'm still waiting for the results. I had breaat cancer last year and had a mastectomy and I'm thinking the worst. I just want to know what I'm dealing with.

Have you been told what your mass is?

  • Hi, I’m still awaiting MRI results from 14th July- no info as yet. Wishing you the very best outcome X

  • You too, I hope you get some news soon x

  • I know, the waiting and not knowing is really difficult. My cyst/mass is about 1.4cm so fairly small. Hope you find out soon and it's the best possible news. x

  • Thank you, and you - I hope you get some news soon and it's the news you want x

  • Hello,

I opted for the frozen section for my surgery, as I had around a 6 cm mass on my left ovary. I was being treated for suspected cancer, so I wanted tests to be done there and then. I had open surgery on the 18th November, after my surgery I found out that I did indeed have ovarian cancer, while I was under further biopsies were taken.

Although a shock to hear I’d actually got/had cancer, my surgery went really well. 2 weeks later I had a appointment with my consultant to get all the detailed results from the biopsies. I’d had stage 1A Germ Cell and a sarcoma types of rare cancer.

Im now under surveillance for the next 5 years, I have regular scans and bloods taken to keep a close eye, all has been well so far.

i wish you all the luck with your surgery and hope you have a swift recovery

    xx

  • Thank you Oscar88 for sharing your experience. I also opted for the laparotomy and frozen section rather than two laparoscopies and having to wait longer for results as I want to know as soon as possible what I am dealing with. Really pleased to hear your operation went well and your cancer was early stage. Have you not had any further treatment (eg chemo) after the op? xx

  • Hi Dewey,

After the Germ Cell Team had an MDT meeting, they decided not to proceed with chemo, so I have bloods taken every 2months, and then CT, MRI and X ray every 6months to monitor. Everything has come back clear so far which is good. Only issue I have had is my scar formed adhesions around my small intestine causing a blockage, so I ended up having further surgery 4 weeks ago, where they opened up the same incision to remove the adhesions. Recovering now though :)
