Hello everyone
My background is in my profile. My question is regarding is coping with ascites and accompanying problems. I have had 3 drains 9, 5 and 6 litres. It is now 2.5 weeks since the last drain and I have rapidly filled again. The nausea is at times so unbearable, I vomit sometimes, have insatiable thirst despite drinking 2.5 - 3 litres of fluid a day and am so so tired. I start chemo in 6 days. I have taken every thing in my stride so far but this is really knocking me out. It is draining every bit of energy from me.
Can anyone offer advice on coping with it or tell me how quickly the chemo had an affect on their ascites.
Thank you.
Hi there, this is one of my current possible issues, apparently it is best to go on a low salt diet so I've started avoiding canned goods and stopped adding salt to my food as for the sickness thats a hard one as I thought the antisickeness I was given made me even sicker, not to mention the constipation that then adds. But I did buy some ginger sweets which did help a bit. Think they are call gin gins.
Hello Fatcats, I too have suffered a lot from ascites. I was diagnosed because of it. I have been drained 4times-roughly every 2 weeks, most recently just 6 days after my1st chemo when I had 9 litres drained, despite my chemo being delayed a week, also because of the need to be drained. It seemed to build again very quickly within days of the chemo. However, since been drained 2weeks ago, I only have a little fluid and my second chemo took place today so hoping the lack of fluid currently means the chemo is starting to work.I will know within the next few days so fingers crossed that your chemo also starts to work as ascites just makes you so incapacitated. The last 2weeks without it has reminded me just how good you can feel when it is not an issue.
Really hoping the chemo works sooner than later for you.
Take care x
Had chemo 4 on Christmas eve but as my tumour has reduced by half and its gone from my liver my chemo was suspended and I'm ready for surgery but since Christmas I started to bloat and was a little breathless, saw the gynaecologist on Thursday who confirmed it the ascites back. I'm surprised but hopefully the surgery will sort it finally. Hope yours has gone. Virtual hugs.
Hello, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
I hope you second chemo worked to help your ascites. Your experience sounds so similar to mine. Let me know how you are doing.
Update on me is good with respect to ascites. The first chemo really caused a reduction in the ascites and that has made such a difference. I had almost forgotten how pre ascites was like.
Unfortunately, I do not tolerate chemo so well I took a severe allergic reaction so the first drug, paclitaxel had to be stopped. Though got carboplatin. then had a week of awful nausea and vomiting . However, not to be doom. And gloom, that passed and I enjoyed a week of no ascites symptoms and was beginning to feel my old self a bit, getting out on Short walks, watching my child play rugby, out for coffee with friends.
So anyone reading this maybe after a search for ascites problems. Take heart, it does get better. Take the bad days and celebrate the good ones. I had my second chemo yesterday, again despite the drugs I took before I reacted, but not as bad so we were able to get paclitaxel in me albeit it slowly and with a lot of steroids. But it was done. Stick in there, the staff are amazing, have supported me and found soloutions.
I am learning souch as I progress.. The main one is to live for now, accept help, think positively but also accept it is OK to have a bad day or moment.. Cry, have moan then move on.
Thank you to those who have reached out to me and others.. It does help and we all appreciate the help we get
Hi Fatcats, thank you for your reply. I a, glad the ascites has improved. It is hell when you are farting around 9 litres of fluid. As soon as I tell friends it’s equivalent to having 4 and a half 2 litre bottles of Irn Bru, they can understand exactly how tired and breathless this makes you. In my case, the ascites has stayed away and I have now had 3 rounds of chemo. as a result, I have been able to get out walking which, as a keen Walker, makes me very happy and allows me to forget about the cancer for a while. I have just had the really positive news that the I have had an excellent response to the chemo and am now awaiting an operation with my chemo suspended. I am hoping that getting as fit as possible will improve my recovery time from the operation and meantime crossing my fingers that the ascites stays away.
I am sorry to hear you have had bad reactions to the chemo but good that that the reaction to your second one was less than the first.Hopefully, your chemo is working and you are getting less of a reaction each time? .
Take care
