Hi ,

I am about to start chemo again , 3rd time .

I will be having taxol every week for 9 weeks, I’m going to try the cold cap again .  I have been advised to try it as it’s taken me 2 years to grow my back to its original style, and I’m gutted at the thought of loosing it all again.
My oncologist said because it’s a smaller dose each week I may keep some of my hair. Any advice please x

  • Hi Deblorraine,

I used the cold cap for my first 6 rounds of chemo (Paclitaxel / Carboplatin) and managed to keep my hair, although it did get more fluffy and a little wavy, where I’d previously had a straight bob.

it’s very do-able when you have the weekly treatment as the infusion time is short enough to allow for the pre and post treatment cooling times that the cap needs. Not the most comfortable hat you’ll ever wear that’s for sure, but if you make sure you have some warm layers and gloves to put on, and a hot drink and book to occupy you for the first 1/2 hour of cooling, after that I found I could pretty much forget about it. One other tip - always get in a trip to the bathroom just before the cap goes on as you’re likely to not be able to get there easily again for 2.5 hours !!

A headband is useful to protect your forehead, and gentle conditioner for your hair ( I can recommend Philip Kingsley no scent no colour).

Like you, I’m back on chemo (and the cold cap) again now.

    Wishing you all the best,

    love Bxx

Many thanks B I’m starting my first chemo next Friday and wasn’t sure bout the cap. I’ve found the info you’ve posted a god send however do u put the conditioner all over your hair and leave it in when the cold cap goes on. The consultant on the ward has zero empathy and has destroyed any positive thoughts I might have had

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear your consultant on the ward hasn’t been supporting you on this Slight frown.

Anyway yes - before the cap goes on your hair should be sprayed with water and plenty of conditioner put on over the top. I always take a hat to put on after treatment too, as not a good idea to venture out into the cold with icy wet hair.

Best not to wash your hair until the next morning either - so I always sleep in a silk hat on chemo nights.

Hope that helps, and please come back and ask if you have any more questions,

    Bx

Thank you , I have just been for assessment and booked my cooling cap. I’ve made sure this time ive had a more fitting one as last time seemed too big . I lost hair from the crown as it wasn’t pulled down tight enough. Hoping it works this time . X

good luck to you too x

Tried to put me off trying it too , said it will prolong my time there by an hour. Think they need you out as soon as they can to be honest , as it’s really busy. But I’m determined to try , it’s taken 2 years to get it back . X
