My wife finished her treatment for non hodgkins lymphoma about 3 weeks ago and, so far so good. It seems to have responded as we hoped. So, we've decided to go away for a few days, specifically South Africa, and we're not sure about travel insurance.
Before I start Googling thought I'd get info here first. Are there specialist insurance companies? Are the costs astronomical this soon after the treatment?
Hi FranklinMac sounds great.
Everyone l will be different but for me. I had to be 2 years in remission before I got any price that was not more expensive then the holiday… but I did have a shed load of full on treatments including two Stem Cell Transplants.
Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.
It’s actually more effective to call a few insurers directly (just Google Travel Insurance Companies for cancer patients - I am not allowed to recommend companies ;)…… as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.
Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of her developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.
It’s important that her clinical team say she is fit to travel and get them to record this on medical records…… and some insurance companies may ask for a letter from her Consultant confirming this.
She may well need a letter from her Consultant or GP detailing what medication she will be taking with her and it is also advisable to have a copy of her repeat prescription paperwork as well.
I am open to infection even although I am many years out from treatments so I always travel with a general antibiotic that is proscribed by my GP.
Do have a look through the 'recommended travel insurance' thread and this New Thread in our Travel insurance group as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. Happy hunting.
Hello!
I had non hodgkins myself. We travel a few times every year including after finishing treatment to Europe visiting family.
My specialist nurse recommended insurance with.
You will have to declare your condition regardless of in remission or not or for how long. When I was just about in remission and now after 4 years it seems to be the same price. I pay about £30 for 2 weeks holiday in Europe for a family of 4. It is not that bad at all and was surprised myself. You can get different packages for a higher price and you can also include covid insurance for about 6 pounds.
I hope this helps you and that you will have a lovely relaxing holiday
Do make sure you insure all of you with the same insurance package. Don,t be tempted to insure yourself with a cheaper alternative as you will also be covered if something would happen to your other half if cancer related and you need to stay.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
