Hello!
My husband is currently on his 3rd cycle of R Chop, I've just had a letter from my children's school to say they will be giving flu nasal vaccine. They've always had it, however I'm slightly worried as it's a live vaccine and I'm worried they may pass it on to my husband.
Has anyone else had this with there children, ideally they need to have a flu vaccine to protect my husband but should it be the jab? I'm waiting for the doctor to call me as he had no idea!
Just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this?
Gemma
Hi again Gemma Dru, yes there could be an issue with your children having the live flu vaccine during your husbands treatment - it's just not worth taking the risk.
We were the same with our granddaughters but our daughters just arranged for them to get the non-live jab instead, this happens a lot for families who have someone going through treatment or are immune-suppressed.
They went through their GP to get it done.
Thank you, the Gp said he had never heard of it which was slightly worrying!
My head is telling me to fight for the jab so will wait until he calls again.
I'm also wondering if I should maybe keep them of school the day the nasal vaccines are given? So much to think about but I just want to keep my husband well!
Some GPs just don't understand...... my GP totally understood.

Contact with other people who have the flu vaccine
Adults
It is safe for you to be in contact with people who have had the flu vaccine as an injection.
Children
Some pre school and primary school children have the flu vaccine as a nasal spray. Avoid close contact with children who have had the nasal spray if you have a severely weakened immune system. You should do so for 2 weeks following their vaccination.
The nasal spray contains a live, but weakened form of the flu vaccine. So there is a very small chance that the vaccine virus could be passed on to you and cause flu if you have a severely weakened immune system.
The injection does not contain a live form, so these precautions do not apply to contact with people who have had the injection.
Ask your doctor whether you need to avoid contact with children who have had the nasal spray flu vaccine.
Hi Gemma,
When I was in treatment my specialist Nurse told me that I should stay away from children that have the Nasal flu vaccine because of my low immunity. This year there should be an option to go for the dead flu vaccine given by injection like with adults. You should be able to tick this on the form. There are 2 big pictures at the bottom of the form, one for spray and one for injection. Alternatively they should be able to get one through the GP.

Thank you, GP called and he said he looked into it all and said although only a very small chance of infection to my husband. They think it's best they have the jab.
Good news, it's all the little things you have to work through but doing this is one more protection in place.
