HI,

My partner was diagnosed with low-grade NHL B cell 15 years ago. He has been doing the odd Rituxan maintenance until his cancer came back and spread to the pancreas. He started chemo and Rituxan and after 6 rounds docs said he needed more but was switching out the Rituxan for a bigger gun Gazyva. In July he started getting pleural effusions. He's been having on average 1 to 2 liters drained 5-7 days. Has anyone else experienced these. We are hoping that his current regimen will help the effusions.

Kathy

  • Hi again , I personally have not had any Pleural Effusion problems but there have been a few folks post about this over the years so let’s see if they are still looking into the community.

There are few folks have been on Obinutuzumab (Gazyva) and did ok with it. You can put Obinutuzumab into the search Mag tool near the top, hit ‘anywhere’ and have a look at the older posts ((posts))

    Hi kathy

I was diagnosed on December 12th  last year Follicular b cell NHL and a separate 13cm kidney tumour unbelievably not connected to each other

I like your partner suffered bilateral pleural effusions and it had a devastating effect on my ability to breathe and function normally

Keep a close eye on heart rate as it caused me to go into atrial fibrillation as well

I had 2 litres removed from each side and its life changing when they do it, horrible but life saving

I had to suffer this four times in total and it was non malignant lymphocytic fluid like a thick yellow treacle so in total I had 16 litres drained over 8 weeks and each time it took about 10 days to come back

The good news is once they stuck me on prednisolone for 2 weeks and then blasted me with rituximab for 4 weeks its never returned since April so there is hope for a good outcome

The treatment allowed them time to remove my kidney on April 22nd and having recovered from that I started chemo yesterday on r-chop thank god its felt like an eternity to treat the lymphoma

    Keep strong and keep fighting

    Hi,

thank you for sharing your story with me.I'm so glad you're not suffering from the pleural effusion anymore and had your kidney removed and you've gotten all over relief. Yes this is a harrowing road.  My partner has the effusions in one lung and has had .8-2 liters weekly for the last few months. He's on Gazyva which is the next generation of the Rituxan. Hopefully it will subside or he'll get some radiation for that spot.

    Be well,

    Kathy
