Hi all

I had my first treatment on Thursday 16th and unfortunately had a pretty dramatic allergic reaction to the Rituximab.
They stopped it immediately and over the next few hours did more test to see what had happened.  They did go on to give me the other 3 chemo drugs.

not sure when they will try this one again. Probably not until after lockdown and I go be on a ward safely.

has anyone else had similar experience with this and how this may affect treatments going forward.
I have consultant appt at end of the week so may know more then too.

thanks

Hi ,  looks like we were diagnosed at a similar time

I had my diagnosis on 9th April , and chemo set for the following week (16th ).  I really struggled due to tumour in neck growing so quick over Easter I couldn’t cope, so they allowed me to start steroids early on Tuesday 13th, abd brought forward chemo to the 14th which meant beginning without a PET , I just had an urgent CT to give them an idea on spread .( which fingers crossed is indicating neck and tonsils only )

due to size of tumour and how aggressive they split the R and CHOP for me ( apparently it’s common on first one to react )

I did the CHOP on the weds and then did the R on the Friday

I still had a really bad reaction too ( but didnt pass out )  although I think I stopped it just in time .   So first they give you the piriton ( this made me drowsy ) and I hadn’t slept the night before anyway

within about 15 mins my head went soo itchy , I didn’t like to shout for help so planned on waiting for  one of the nurses to come in the room.  Five minutes later I was getting hives all up arms , ears burning and I didn’t know the state my face was then in at this point.   I grabbed a nurse who could immediately see my reaction and the lumps appearing all up my arms
so typical that i’d be the one to react .   They treated me with lots of hydrocortisone and piriton again snd it soon calmed down.   They then restarted  it more slowly.   It meant everyone on the ward left late on the Friday but I was fine

they’ve assured me that the first time is always the worse.
my next lot is due in ten days  and this time I’m having the full rchop in one day but going in early so they can take their time over the full day .  Apparently if you do have any hay fever or pet allergies you are certain to have a reaction - abd o do do should have known

I’m dreading my reaction again but like you want everything that will guarantee this is banished and not returning

wishing you lots of luck with the next treatment !

  • It's not uncommon to have a reaction to the R. I did too just the same as you, but the second one for me was fine. They did it slowly and stepped up the speed gently. From the third one I was fine at normal speed, so don't worry.

This does all sound very similar.
my next treatment is scheduled for 6th May.will see how the R goes but am encouraged by others experiences with it

with isolation and being off from work it feels like everyday is just concentrating on meds, whether I can eat and what appointments I have.
oh and video chats with friends and family.
