Hi there. My FIL was diagnosed last month. He’s only had one chemo and antibody treatment so far. His next treatment is this week. Can I ask - is it ‘normal’ for him to be in pain in between treatments? Sorry if this is a silly question - we’re all trying to digest the news and get to grips with absolutely everything that is happening. Thank you x

  • Hi  and welcome to our corner of the Community.

The simple answer would be yes, but it does all depend on where his NHL is presenting and often the type of NHL.

I was in very bad pain for a good few months during my first 2-3 cycles as my mass was in my neck (hit my community name to see my story) and had trapped nerves and damaged muscles so as the chemo melted the mass away the nerves and muscles were released but were damages and actually took a good few years to heal.

Apart for the pain - how is he doing?

I had a RCHOP treatment and because of other issues (had kidney and spleen out eight weeks before treatment) I did have pain I discussed this with my team and immediately was prescribed pain relief. Discuss with your specialist nurse or consultant they will have an answer to what ever side effects you will have. To quote John & Mike it is all doable!

Thanks so much for replying. It is in the kidney area. He has called 111 and they’ve given him codeine but it’s still not touching the sides. He will try the Christie first thing and speak to the pain management team x stay safe and well x

Thank you for getting in touch. He has been given codeine which isn’t helping much at all so he’s going to call the Christie first thing and speak to the pain management team x stay safe and well x

Everyone is different I was given Oramorph  which helped a lot..  I also had cocodimal  initially.  I found my team to be extremely helpful during the journey. Hope all goes well in the morning.

  • This discussion has reminded me of the time when the pain was very bad and I was having to using the evil Tramadol ....... I was seeing things claiming the walls by the time the pain started to reduce I went down to using Oramorph then on Dihydrocodeine for a rather long time and it did take 4 years before I came off everything but Paracetamol....... but I have reduced this down a lot mainly due to the shortage.

((hugs)) to everyone from a far.

Really appreciate this Mike. Good to know that this is by no means out of the ordinary!

  • I had all sorts of aches and pains. My lymphoma was all over the place and I got pain all over the place. I don't think the medics realise that it is painful as it is treated. I had a large area of lymphoma in the middle of my chest and a couple of times it was so painful they told me to go to A&E. they said it was reflux but I really don't think it was. It would last 12 hours and then go completely. I believe it was the lymphoma melting away. That area needed zapping with radiotherapy to finally see it completely gone.
