My mum finished treatment July 2022 for nhl in left lung it didn’t work. She been on watch and wait till last month when she having more tightness in chest and tired and felt unwell. She had pet scan and results showed nhl has grown over 1cm, to 7.5cm, spread to mamory gland, and another lymph node and pleural effusion. She has now got weird rash.
she starts palliative chemo after Christmas, is this good sign they are giving her chemo,
Hi again Bells and I am sorry to hear about your mum.
A lot of people associate palliative care with dying. It is in fact more about living, and helps people to preserve their quality of life and psychological health in spite of cancer and its treatment.
This link What is palliative care? will explain the whole subject of palliative care.
So yes, it is positive that her clinical team see her to be fit enough to have chemo but you do have to ask some specific questions to her consultant with regards to your mum’s short term and long term prognosis even with having this treatment.
The chemo may stop her condition from growing or may just slow down the progression of her condition…… chemo is often used to improve quality of life as it can also help reduce pain but with all chemo treatments there may be ‘other’ side effects she may have to deal with……… you need to ask some hard questions to completely understand what the road going forward looks like ((hugs))
We don’t get a lot of response from consultant. My mum has low immune system too I have asked questions about can she die from treatment etc we don’t get straight answers. We got given a leaflet of side effects, she has had the nhl in left lung close to heart
Thank you for reply, i know that hey give treatment even if you have a death sentence, my dad had a brain tumour in hey told him he had total of 9 months to live and they still did radiotherapy. He did exactly in the 9 months. My mum is getting worse every day and you can’t get straight answers from consultant. I know palliative chemo is to make life easier and relieve symptons but she is terrified and wondering is it worth starting treatment to be more unwell
Sorry to hear that your mum and you are not getting clear answers…… does your mum have a dedicated Specialist Cancer Nurse/Key Worker assigned to her…… when we wanted clear answers we often got better answers from my CNS.
