Hi, ive only just joined, I've been diagnosed with a carcenoid tumour on my right lung. Ive been told its 2.5cm stage 1 and in one lymph gland. Im waiting for an appointment for my pre-op, then the operation. They wont know whether will be keyhole, robotics or open surgery, till im in theatre. Very scared, but want it over with.

  • Hello, I know it is a scary time. I was diagnosed with a carcinoid lung tumour January 2024 - mine was blocking the airway to the lower lobe of my lung and had effected a lymph node. It was removed along with 2 lobes of my right lung in March 24 - and I was given the all clear in April 24. My breathing is better now than it has been in years as my right lung wasn't working properly before. I get a little more out of breath quicker but generally there are no bad side effects of the operation.

My surgery was open because my tumour would have been awkward to get to with keyhole - at the end of the day I told them to do whatever they needed to do to get it out. I was off work for about 4 months but recovery has been good and steady.

It is totally normal to feel scared but the fact they have found it and it is stage 1 is good. No one can tell you not to be scared - i know I was beyond terrified but don't be afraid to ask all the questions you need to ask of the Drs, nurses, surgeons (no question is a silly question) and keep seeking support from Macmillan as you feel you need to.

Hope your Pre-op is soon - I found the not knowing was harder than the knowing and having a plan of action.

Take care - I wish you well x

  • Thankyou for your lovely reply, it has made me feel a bit better about the situation. The day i had my xray, the start of it all, was the day i retired from work. So at the moment my retirement hasnt got off to a good start. Although it is giving me a focus and also my grandchildren. Hope you carry on keeping clear. Best wishes x
