My mum was diagnosed with neuroendocrine 2 weeks ago. Since then things have taken an awful unexpected turn. The cancer has spread from her oesophagus to her perineum and in surrounding lymph nodes. She cannot eat or drink and too weak for chemotherapy. She has had a stent fitted but she cannot stop being sick I she eats or drinks. We have been told by the hospital that they will only speak to next of kin (my sister) and only that person can go see her twice a week. My sisters husband also has terminal cancer and we would like to share the responsibility but the hospital has said no. They have taken mum's feeding tube out on Sunday in prep for stent fitting which didn't happen until Tuesday. Mum hasn't been given food now for 56 hours and this will make her so weak. I do t know anything about this cancer or how to support my mum (68) and family. Any help or support will be appreciated.
Thank you
Hello scaredandcovidconfused
Thank you for taking the time to share some of the experiences you and your family are facing. You are very welcome on all the forums that link into your Mum's current diagnosis and of course in the forums like family and friends, which are here to support you personally.
Until now I was not a member of this forum, but I was asked to jump over and take a look at your post. My experience is as a loved one of someone with Oesophageal Cancer, I also have experience of hospital visiting restrictions and limited visits. I want you to know that we hear you, and feel your frustration and fears.
I am so sorry that your mum has this diagnosis and that you are held back from providing her support and comfort, are you able to tell me whether your sister has power of attorney or whether she is registered NOK?
Have you asked to speak to the lead hospital representative, I understand why hospitals reduce the number of visitors, but had I been allowed in to see my Dad in hospital I believe I could have guided his nursing care, but back in April no one was allowed to visit.
My husband was diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer in May 2020, but you have already mentioned that Mum is too weak for Chemotherapy, have they told you what the treatment plan is after the stent is inserted?
I am replying on my mobile as I am at work, but will come back soon and add some links that you may find helpful.
