I have been on the online community for 15 years being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.
My best friend of 57 years has now been diagnosed with MM. I know this as it was on her discharge notes from the hospital but she is unaware at the moment. She has an appointment with Haematology on 3rd October.
She is unable to stand for long and just about manages to go on the commode a few steps with the aid of a frame.
Her left leg is very painful. My question is what pain relief are you on? All she takes is codeine at the moment.
I have a feeling that she has cancer in her bones.
My friend is an avid walker and regularly walked 12 miles. This has hit her very hard.
Thanks
Sue
Hi Sue sue G and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us and hear about your best friends MM diagnosis.
I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. I don’t have Myeloma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a very rare (also incurable) but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 4 in late 2013) so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is rather different I do appreciate the challenges of living with an incurable blood cancer.
As you may well know that MM is a blood cancer and this circulates in the bone marrow so people can have a significant effect in the bone marrow and so this results in significant bone and even joint pain.
As for pain meds she/you need to talk with her clinical tam or GP....... there are many levels of pain control. I went through many, I found codeine meds bad for constipation so watch out for that....... when I was at my worst just before my main treatment I was on oral Morphine and at times Tramadol. Tramadol was very effective but it can have mental challenging like hallucinations...... this was not a great time.
Let’s look for the group members to pick up on your post. There are a number of active group members at the moment so why not click on the main ‘Myeloma Group’ title and this will bring up all the group posts. Have a look at the posts and as always you can hit reply to any post and connect in with the wider group conversations.

Thank you Mike. I am on morphine patches and Tramadol for spinal problems due to osteoporosis.
I think her discharge letter referred to bone mets hence my thoughts of bone cancer in her leg.
I will be going to her appointment with her on 3rd October. Just hope they can give her some positive news.
Thanks again
Sue
I am no expert but if she has a bone cancer then this most likely is a different cancer as when it comes to blood.cancers they can show up in multiple areas ((hugs))
