I’m new to this. But was hoping someone could help. My Mother in law has just entered the palliative care stage, she will be living with us until we can no longer cope with her care. But I don’t really have any idea of how long this could last. I’m trying to manage everyone’s expectations and it’s a fine balance. She was discharged from hospital on a ‘Fast Track’ and I understand this is only put in place if life expectancy is less than 12 weeks. But is this because her bloods results are so bad? How do the hospitals decide what the expectancy is? A friend whose MiL also had myeloma was given some sort of chart that explained the numbers and what to expect. But we’ve not seen anything like that. At what point do I panic?

  • Hi  and welcome to this corner of the community but so sorry to hear about your mother.

This is a very challenging time for all the family, I am not sure if there are any group members navigating this difficult time at the moment - let’s see …… however I do see that you have joined and posted in our general Supporting someone with incurable cancer support group, this group will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

The Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or via Webchat and Email too. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Wishing you peace and strength for the weeks ahead.
