Hi Everyone

I'm 55 and live in Germany with my husband, 2 dogs and 1 cat. I'm from Edinburgh and really miss living in Scotland. I was diagnosed with MM late April and I'm just about to start my 4th cycle of introductory chemo on Tuesday. the plan is to harvest my stem cells in September and do the Stem Cell Transplant in October.

I've been fairly stable over the summer but recently, my anxiety has really kicked in turning me into an emotional wreck. I guess as I get closer to the SCT, Im becoming more stressed about it.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and look forward to being part of this community.

  • Hi Ginty. I was in a similar situation to you in 2019. Keep going with the induction treatment and don't worry about your SCT. It'll be fine. I'm a bit older than you, 63, but doing well after my stem cell transplant. Happy to offer any advice and here for you with any questions you may have.

  • Hi   and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us and hear about diagnosis.

I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. I don’t have Myeloma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a very rare (also incurable) but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 4 in late 2013) so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is rather different I do appreciate the challenges of living with an incurable blood cancer……. and more so as I have had 2 Allo (donor) SCTs (June 2014 then Oct 2015) and coming up to 8 years on I am still in remission.

I see that you have also joined our dedicated Stem cell transplant support group. This us a safe place to get a wide range of experiences from people who have navigated the magical mystery tour that is SCT.

  • Hi.   Ginty.       Newly diagnosed.   With.   MM.  we have an Airedale terrier.      Hard fir me to walk him now.    Awaiting first chemo cycle here. In Worcestershire. U.  K.         NHS.  Brilliant and also grateful for  this type of platform to share  and learn.      Best wishes for next stage.     Hope you can overcome the concerns.       It will be worth it.

  • Hello Ginty

My SCT was in September 2021. My advice to you is prepare yourself. It is a tough road but just be aware that you will feel very unwell just after it. You could get all sorts of side effects and you will feel like you’ve been hit by a bus. Sorry to be blunt but just get your mind ready for all that’s ahead and tell yourself “ I can do this, it’s not forever “

I am now Myeloma free and doing great!!. I am so grateful that there is such a thing as a SCT and as time goes on the bad memories fade

I wish you every best wish going forward

  • Hi sweetheart and welcome.  Don't worry,  it's perfectly normal to feel a little scared. I haven't actually had a transplant but I know a few people who have and they have all been successful.  One guy I know is early 60 s and back to playing tennis. Another was an older lady who is still in remission after 10 years. Another lady in late 50 s had it done about 3 months ago. She s out every day for short walks. She just needs to get her energy levels back and keep away from infections. You're going to be OK. You ve go this xx
