Dad's diagnosis

My dad was diagnosed on Thursday and started chemo yesterday. We know so little about what is going on, and his healthcare team is making it harder by constantly telling him how rare his cancer is. I'm incredibly grateful that although he's 69, he's in such good health that they're able to do the aggressive chemo usually reserved for younger patients, and that they had a bed for him and could start right away.

I live in the UK but my family is in Canada, so being far away has been very hard. I talk to my dad daily, I know he's trying to stay positive but he's scared and anxious. I love my dad so much. He was supposed to live to be 100! I'm the youngest in my family, and my dad and I may not always have been the closest, but we 'get' each other because we're so much alike. I'm completely heartbroken.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us and hear about your dad’s diagnosis…… and yes, this will be hard for you being so far away from him

I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. I don’t have Myeloma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a very rare (also incurable) but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 4 in late 2013) so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is rather different I do appreciate the some of the challenges of this journey well but not the caring side.
