Hello,

This feels strange, i first found myself on here when i was caring for my dad during his battle with throat cancer, dad passed away nearly two years ago now.

Being there for my dad during the hardest fight of his life was equally the most painful and rewarding experience I’ve ever had to face.

After dad passed I was welcomed into the Macmillan online community even more being invited to become an online champion, what a bloody honour. It was so good to be able to use my experience to help others, and for a good while allowed me to live in a world dad still existed.

Trouble is I started to live again, I started re-build myself and had to choose life, everything I have. But instead of respectfully advising my Macmillan champion team of my change of circumstance I ignored it.

Well now I’m back, asking for help. My partner,  boyfriend, nope my best friends mum has recently been diagnosed with myeloma,. I know he/we have a long hard road ahead of us and we are talking about it heaps. But I think I need to know what to expect with this specific cancer so I am hoping someone in this forum might be able to help me understand where we are at. X

  • Hi Lucie  and an unfortunate welcome to this corner of the Community. I am so sorry to hear about your partners mum’s diagnosis. A blood cancer diagnosis is ever so challenging as the journey can be rather different from many other cancer types.

You will know that I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. I don’t have Myeloma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 4) so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well but not the specifics of her condition.

So let’s look for the group members to pick up on your post. There are a number of active group members at the moment so why not click on the main ‘Myeloma Group’ title and this will bring up all the group posts. Have a look at the posts and as always you can hit reply to any post and connect in with the wider group conversations.

For good information do check out Myeloma UK who produce very good information and run various support platforms including their Buddy Scheme, they also have a Support Line on 0800 980 3332

You may also want to check to see if you have a Maggie's Centre in your area as these folks are amazing and most centres do run monthly Heamatology Support Groups most are online at the moment….. the one I attend does have a few folks with Myeloma in it so worth checking as your partners mum could connect in with these groups.

Always around to help more or just to chat ((hugs))
