Waiting to see Consultant Haematologist

Hello People,

I feel like a bit of a gatecrasher here as I've not had a diagnosis but a couple of anomalies were flagged up a few weeks ago during a blood test and my GP called to tell me he was going to request an urgent Haematologist appointment.  I have an appointment a week today.

I have stage 3B kidney disease and all through the lockdowns I had no contact with the Nephrologist so I kept track of the situation by making sure I got regular blood tests. I'd been so unbelievably tired for months that I requested a B12 and Iron test and it came back B12 and Ferritin deficient with enlarged but reduced red blood cells = megaloblastic anaemia. 6 shots of B12 have done nothing to improve the fatigue. The anomalies were high levels of immunoglobulins and a discrete band, at least this is all my Dr was prepared to tell me. I've been experiencing lactic acid all round my body at the slightest exertion on a daily basis for months now so I'm hoping the Haematologist can explain this.

I had the blood tests today and the envelopes for them arrived a week ago so of course I looked up the initials and I know I'm being tested for Myeloma and one of the tests is to determine how far along. It's the waiting isn't it, not knowing. These next seven days are going to be the longest ever. I'm praying I'll be fine coz I can't bare the thought of leaving my children and grandbabies.

  • Hi  and welcome to this corner of the Community although always sorry to see folks joining us. Your post was highlighted that it had not received a reply so I am dropping in past. I am Mike  and I help out around some of our blood cancer groups.

I don’t have Myeloma but was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare incurable but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 4a so in some way understand this journey rather well unfortunately.

The fact that you have seen that one of the blood tests took you to Myeloma, blood tests will also help rule out or in other blood disorders.

The whole Heamatology subject is very complicated and until all the results are in and a Haematologist has reviewed everything it’s guess work.

Back in 1999 my consultant was rather sure about my type of blood cancer but it took a year, 2 CT scans and 6 biopsies to eventually find the truth.

But 22 years on I am still around doing great and yes playing with my 4 granddaughters.

Let’s see what your appointment brings along and take it from there.

    Always around to chat.

    Mike (Thehighlander)
