Diet

Having had my brother diagnosed with MM at around the age of 56 just like to know what others had to say in regards to diet and stress, is a run down immune system possibly a catalyst for this disease, anecdotally have others seen a correlation?

In fighting MM are there things a person can do in conjunction with the traditional treatment that others have done and felt it was beneficial?

Thank you.

  • Hi  I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups.

I don’t have Myeloma but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a very rare (also incurable) but treatable type of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 4 in late 2013) so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is rather different I do appreciate the challenges of living with an incurable blood cancer.

I was catching up with posts and was reading through your first post about radiotherapy and came across this one.

Basucally you have answered your own question - your brothers MM diagnosis is just 'luck of the draw'.

Diet does make a difference to our general health but honestly when it comes to cancer it’s all about him being the 1 in 4 who will get a cancer diagnosis in their life time.

During treatment his body is going to need fuel….. as this is where his energy comes from….. and the best fuel is a healthy balanced diet…… protein at times is important especially if his weight starts to drop off…., I lost 27kgs during my treatment years so was on a high protons diet.

The most important thing about the food he eats is he basically needs to think he is on a pregnancy diet!!!!….. as his immune system is going to be reduced during treatment so in normal circumstances a heathy immune system would fight a small food bacteria no problem……. His immune system may not be able to do this so a small bug can turn into a big problem.
