Hi All,

My husband was diagnosed with Myeloma after spinal surgery in December , was then found to have Lung cancer as well. , and he had   a Lobectomy in February . He has now started Chemo treatment last week for this. At present not treating Myeloma as doctors say the Lung is more urgent. Over the last week his pain in lower spine has got increasingly worse ( always there but duller,) where he is  struggling to walk, we went to A and E yesterday had xray no breaks or fractures thank goodness. Have increased his pain patch and added  small amount of liquid Morphine. As yet no improvement. So so hard watching a loved one in pain. He has been through so much in a few months with a long way to go. Has anyone suffered with both, any help, advice for him and me would be grateful. Thank  you .

  • Hi  and welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various blood cancer groups.

I don’t have Myeloma but was diagnosed in 1999 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of NHL Stage 4a so my experiences will be different.

It sounds like your husband is having a hard time and I am sorry to hear about his back pain. I had various pains including back pain during my years of treatment but these were put down to the various treatments used and the lack of activity as I was bed bound for some time.

I see that you posted in our Ask an Nurse section and this is the link to the reply below.

I do hope a way forward can be found to relive his pain.

  • Hi Eunice,

So feel for you! My husband was diagnosed with advanced Myeloma (80% of his bone marrow affected) 18th months ago. He was in incredible pain which was awful to see, with four broken vertebrae and a compressed spine. At the time of diagnosis he was told he would only have two-three months without treatment. He went into hospital via ambulance on Boxing Day 2020 and whilst in there he caught COVID, This delayed his treatment, but he started chemo mid February and this followed with a stem cell transplant eight months later. He has gone from hardly being able to get out of the armchair just over a year ago to now walking between 3-6kms every day. He is still on Zomorph etc., but the pain is greatly reduced so he can cope. I’m hoping your husband will receive the same care and attention my husband has and he will find some relief. Fingers crossed hearing our story might give you some hope. Big hugs to you, Marion xx

  • Thank you Marion, that is good news , he back in hospital since Wednesday, just dont know what the pain is been caused by he is waiting for CT scan .
