A little scared

Hi everyone, I haven’t been on here for quite a few months. I was diagnosed with Myeloma last October. I had a Bone marrow biopsy  and it was quite painful.
Since then my Paraprotein numbers have been going up and up with every blood test. I had another MRI a week and a half ago, had more blood taken, and now got another Bone marrow biopsy booked in for next Tuesday. I am totally panicking as I remember how uncomfortable it was. Can I be sedated to have this done?
The doctors are talking about starting chemo and steroids. I am very nervous. My mind is all over the place at the moment, not knowing what to think.
I have been getting a lot of low back pain and my GP has prescribed me low dose cocodomol to try to start with.
Any replies would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance xx

  • Hi Kenzie,

I’m really sorry to read how you are doing at the moment. I have had quite a few bone marrow biopsies and the really strange thing is they have been really varied in terms of pain levels. True, one was absolutely excruciating but then another I honestly didn’t feel anything and then others have been somewhere in the middle. I really hope you get an easy one this time. I’ve never had sedation but I think it’s possible so might be worth checking with your team if it is worrying you?

In terms of starting chemo and steroids, I can understand how that would be daunting. I think I was lucky in that I didn’t have any significant side-effects - mainly strange sleep patterns due to the steroids - and I really hope that you’ll find the same. I tried to see the treatment as the path to get me where I wanted to be - feeling better - and I definitely got a reduction in back pain when the treatment started working, so I’m really hoping you find the same.

Hope this helps in some way.

    Greg

  • Thank you for your reply Greg. It is all such a worrying time, but it definitely helps when there are other people going through the same.
I am quite anxious about a lot right now, I’ll have to take each thing as it happens.
    Thanks again
