Hello readers
My beloved dad, 73 was diagnosed with stage 2/3 mesothelioma in July and has had 3 cycles of immunotherapy. He is always very ill for the first week and then improves between treatments ( every 3 weeks) this time he is getting choking in his throat from all the mucus in his throat and says he feels he hasn’t long. It breaks my heart. Is the mucus normal for this disease or is it the immunotherapy.
do you or your family member suffer with this debilitating symptom and what if anything can be done to ease it? He is reluctant to speak to hospital in case they pull the treatment on him they always ask are you feeling ok before the next round. We know it’s expensive but it’s his only hope. Also did anyone combine radiotherapy or chemo with the immunotherapy.
I feel so alone I have 2 young children only 3 and 5 and no other family do still have mum but she won’t be around forever either. Does anyone have any other treatment advice or help for the symptoms
hugs Liz
Hi Liz,
I am Steve, my wife has Leiomyosarcoma so a very different type of cancer but have been here a while - my wife's cancer is currently stable and we got to living with cancer rather than anything else.
I saw nobody has responded yet so i thought I would send you something but little I can say about mesothelioma. What might help perhaps is to ring the helpline here 0808 808 0000 and speak to one of our team there.
When we have a loved one with cancer it is totally normal to feel alone, despite the statistics we never think it will happen to us and one thing the community can do is being us together. We have quite a great piece on this here.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Really sorry to hear this, tbh I do not know much about your wife's illness, but I wish her all the best ,hope she is getting the help and support she needs.
The palliative team &hospice have been a great support ,as yet I have not taken up the offer of counselling, I know I should , but just not ready yet x
Appreciate your response , Thank you
Hello my husband had mesothelioma was diagnosed in August of 2023 with stage 4 and had 3 rounds of immunotherapy and passed 48 hours after the third round on October 22 2023 He never had mucus. But was put on oxygen and had a drainage system put in his lung. He was 68 years old . I really hope that your dad has a better outcome and that the treatment helps . Praying for him and you and your family it is a very difficult time for you all I know it is hard to watch a loved one suffer and to feel helpless. I have lost my mom husband and a brother in the last 3 years I can’t only say take one day at a time and make the most out of this time. Sending you love and hugs and prayers for your dad and the whole family.
Thank you Steve for taking the time to write even though your Wife’s cancer is a different type, it’s most appreciated. And you’re right just a togetherness to talk with others who understand means a great deal. I am very sorry your wife has cancer I hope her treatment goes to plan thank you again
Hello I am so sorry to read about your personal story of this awful disease and the resulting loss of your dear husband. My dad never took a pill in his life this absolutely came out the blue had no symptoms other than increasing fatigue and was losing weight and not trying. To lose so many Of your family in only a few years I feel for you. Thank you for your kind words and send my love and hugs to you aswell.
Hi Liz, my husband had over 20 rounds of immunotherapy but didn’t really have side affects just tired when he had the double dose, maybe mention to the nurse as they may be able to give your dad something to help, they don’t usually stop treatment unless something is seriously not right.
