Mesothelioma, depression and possible Dementia

What on earth can we do? Dad’s memory and cognitive abilities are severely reducing. He doesn’t understand what’s being said, he’s angry that his disease means he gets no straight answers and he’s now starting to believe that we are all ganging up against him. He cannot explain what is making him angry (his words make no sense). Pre cognitive problems he refused to make any decisions about his own treatment and gets upset when we make decisions, he has developed a really nasty attitude and he’s refusing a carer to help us out.

his mesothelioma isn’t doing much, it seems like the immunotherapy is doing its job. Dad isn’t at all positive about it, he’s feeling rather ill and breathless and he’s not tolerating it at all very well.

We now have to go in twice a day to give him his pills as he’s accidentally overdosing, tipping his pills out of his dosset box and getting them muddled up.

I live about 300 miles away and my brother runs his own business and he’s lost a lot of work and income due to this and it’s starting to damage his reputation for reliability.

I’m down as often as I can but there are consequences to that too.

he needs to go in a home, or have a carer in at least once a day to make him safe. He’s in the pipeline to get his memory assessed.

how on earth do we cope?

how do we get through this?

so sorry for the rant

  • Hi again  I have a completely different cancer although I do also have asbestosis.

You are having such a difficult time but I don’t have any experience to bring to the table….. I do see that you have been posting in our Carers only support group and you may want to have a look at our Supporting someone with incurable cancer support group.

Let’s look for members of the group to pick up on your post.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 as this service provides practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and support all the family.

    ((hugs))
