hi there my husband has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma he used to work at the gas board in the 80s He starts his treatment at Mount Vernon hospital tomorrow, please could anyone recommend an insurance company who would be willing to insure us for two cruises we have booked, thank you very much

  • Hi  welcome to the community but sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.

Getting affordable Travel Insurance can be a challenge and at times the price quoted could be higher than the cost of the holiday and some people do find that no Insurance is being offered and unfortunately Cruise Insurance is especially hard to get.

I had to be 2 years in remission from my type of blood cancer before I could get any price but these decisions are often all down to cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on by the insurers risk assessment - I am very open to serious infections due to a reduced immune system so this is seen as a high risk factor for insurers.

Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.

It is actually more effective to call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.

Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.

I am not allowed to recommend any companies but do have a look through the Recommended Travel Insurance 2023 in our Travel insurance group as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are.

You can also look through all the individual members of posts in the group as well.

I do hope you can get cover.

  • Hi Thehighlander

thank you much will have look at the Travel Insurance group hopefully we can get ourselves sorted out

  • Hi, you can also refer to a couple of specialist medical directories at these links, set up following rules brought in by the insurance watchdog (FCA). These contain firms that specialise in providing insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions. I hope this helps with your journey..https://www.biba.org.uk/find-insurance?find-insurance-type=636#result&pageNumber=1 or https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/everyday-money/insurance/use-our-travel-insurance-directory

  • Good afternoon Tandridge. I too have mesothelioma and was worried about travel insurance. We insured ourselves with All Clear which seemed to be quite good compared to others. We booked an annual travel insurance for myself which cost about £750 that included cruise cover. Being on immunotherapy seemed to bring the quote down to a reasonable level. They initially thought I was on Chemotherapy and the annual quote was £1475 which is quite high.

So I guess it depends on the treatment plan. Remember to include any illness or medication as insurance companies will always try to Get out of paying out. We have just come back from a lovely 7 day cruise.

    Best wishes

    Mike

  • Hello how is your husband doing ? Hope ok, my husband has just had his 15th immunotherapy treatment, all has gone amazing up until now.  His HB has dropped and he is exhausted, not too good.  Maybe a transfusion will take place not sure yet, speaking with the doctors …..
