Chemo following unsuccessful Immunotherapy

Hi all,

my husband had 3 months of immunotherapy but scan showed cancer progression. Now he’s started Chemo and will hopefully have his 2nd session next week.
He has almost constant background pain, in the site of the cancer. Has anyone had chemo, even with such pain, which helped slow this evil disease? I’m worried the pain means progression and wonder if chemo can help.
Im trying to keep him as comfortable as possible but its so upsetting to see him suffer (I never show him my upset now) Cry

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read about the pain your husband is in and it must be very hard to see him suffering.

I'm not a member of this group but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I presume that his oncology team are aware of his pain?

    ((hugs))

  • Thanks. They are indeed aware of his pain. I worry as he repeatedly told them that his breathlessness wasn’t improving over the three months and this means the cancer went unchecked.
Thanks for your help. Sometimes I feel like I’m shouting into the void but I also understand everyone’s experience is different. Best wishes, Gwen

  • Hi

I also had immunotherapy for three months and unfortunately it didn’t work, I recently completed my second cycle of chemotherapy .  Chest pain has been problematic for me with some days worse than others . I take 5mgs of oxycodone (morphine makes me itch like a monkey See no evil) morning and evening and 15mgs  of meloxicam which takes the edge off it . It’s so uncomfortable Inreally feel for you husband ,a heat pad works for me .

  • Hi Jonesy, sorry about your situation. Thank you so much for sharing your similar experience. It’s reassuring to chat to someone experiencing this. Im glad they found an alternative to morphine for you. It’s amazing to know a heat pad helps. I’m definitely going to look into getting one for him. Good luck with your chemo. I hope it slows it down for you

  • Actually since my last message I have had to increase the oxycodone I’m wondering if the chemo has flared things up a bit does your husband find the pain is in different places and of a different type? Sometimes crushing then an ache then stabbing  it keeps me on my toes !! The increased dose has helped. Hope your husband is feeling better and not to troubled by chemo side effects

  • Hi GwendyMc

They gave my husband Pregabalin, Olextra slow release & Celecoxib - he also used to use a heat pack & found that did give him some relief.

Hope you manage to find something that helps.

  • Morning Jonesy, yes… a couple of things happened, flare up wise. His pain patterns have changed like yours. . You describe it pretty well. Also his Morphine has also been increased due to pain. Also he’s experiencing it more in thoracic area, for example. Also he has succumbed to a chest infection which has needed hospitalisation. I’m hoping things settle for you and my husband.

  • I’m so sorry he has had to go to hospital and wish him a speedy recovery . My pain has improved  but the increased dose has made me a bit sleepy I’m hoping it will get better.  Pregablin will be next on the list !

  • Thanks that’s good to know, I’m definitely getting a heat pad

  • Hi Jonsey,

    Thanks

oh I’m glad your pain has improved. I’m hoping the sleepiness fades away as you get used to it,

I’m so sorry to say that things have escalated for us. Chemotherapy has not helped at all. The cancer is progressing and into new areas. So, no more chemotherapy. Also he’s still in hospital and his chesty cough is still at large. Also his throat was getting very sore with food getting stuck. He failed a swallow test, as his swallowing mechanism is breaking down. He is now Nil By Moutb and had a feeding tube and medicated by IV. Everything declined so quickly as none of the treatment helped in his case, we are devastated. We are meeting with palliative team on Tues to discuss care options. I’m so sad, it’s beyond words
