Life after lymph node surgery

Hello I have just joined this site after a very harrowing meeting with the surgeon who plans to do the operation. He was very scary emphasising it is a major operation ( which I knew) but telling me I would never be the same afterwards!! and not to expect to go back to the way I was.I was in shock and didn't ask him what that meant so I am wondering if anyone who has had this treatment can tell me how they were afterwards. I can't see why I shouldn't return to how I was even if it takes a few months. When I Google this treatment it says most people fully recover after 4-6 weeks. Many thanks for any help

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the melanoma forum which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

When you say you are having "lymph node surgery" do you mean a sentinel lymph node biopsy, which checks to see if cancer cells have reached the first lymph node in the system, or a lymphadenectomy, which is when all your lymph nodes are removed because they have been found to be cancerous?

When you have a minute, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you I will do that. Best wishes

  • That's great that you're going to complete your profile but, in order that we can share our experiences with lymph node removal with you, we need to know if you're having a sentinel lymph node biopsy or a lymphadenectomy as the difference in what to expect afterwards could be quite different.
