Having had surgery to remove Acral Lentiginous Melanoma from my left heel and lymph nodes from left thigh and groin I am now about to start immunotherapy as the melanoma is still in my system (though not in any major organs yet). I have opted for the double drug treatment to start with - Nivolumab + Ipilimubab for the first four treatments every 3 weeks then will then have the Nivolumab monthly for the rest of the 2 year course.
I have lymphodema in my left leg and though the skin grafts and scars have healed well I still have a lot of numbness and tingling on the sole of my foot and on my thigh where the lymph nodes were removed. (End of June)
Is anyone going through a similar course of treatment?
Hi Susan,
My mum doesn't have acral melanoma - hers is cutaneous melanoma - but she is a stage 4 patient, having four doses of Ipi / Nivo then nivo on its own as a follow up. She's just had her second cycle, so she's potentially halfway through if she makes it to all four treatments. So far, her side effects have been fatigue and some mild tummy problems. Apart from one bad week where she felt quite unwell, she's been living life pretty much like normal and the treatment hasn't interfered with things too much.
My mother had to have all the lymph nodes removed from one armpit back in June and I know she has some numbness and tingling in that area still, although I think that's improving slowly.
Wishing you all the best of luck with your treatment. Immunotherapy can be tough on the body for some patients, but it really does have amazing outcomes for so many people.
Best wishes,
Pip x
Hi Susan, I’m stage 3B alm. Was on bottom ball of foot. I’ve had removed, grafted & immunotherapy x8, then 6 weeks later it was back in lymph node. I had new immunotherapy x3, surgery to remove lymph node. Plan was to f/u with 12 more doses, but after the 3, the dang node grew in size. They don’t think it responded at all. They decided not to go with 12 other doses. Right now there is no evidence of cancer, but return risk is high. If/when it returns I will have the double whammy immunotherapy. Good luck to you & keep us posted!
