Hi, I’ve had a pretty rough time with the hospital I am at. I initially got diagnosed with melanoma in March. I had an appointment booked for a second surgery for the surrounding area to be removed then got a phone call a couple of days before the surgery date to say that my mole was being retested as they aren’t even sure it’s actually cancerous. Fast forward 4 weeks and I’ve had to chase up my results for them to tell me that it’s a ‘spitz neavus’ (I believe). I don’t know much about this and never really got an explanation as to what it was so I took to Google.
I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else has been through the same or similar to me or has been diagnosed with this? It’s good news that I don’t have cancer however I can’t wrap my head around being diagnosed with melanoma and for the hospital to now say it isn’t anymore. I am still needing to have a WLE as well which I am waiting a date for.
Hi Rhiannon99
That's great news that after a second biopsy, you have discovered you don't have cancer. However, it must have stirred up all sorts of emotions to be told that you had cancer and then told that you don't.
The British Association of Dermatologists has this information on Spitz naevus, and on the Cancer Research website it says:
"Unfortunately, in a small number of cases, Spitz naevi can look so much like melanoma that it can be almost impossible even for an expert to tell the difference. If it is impossible to tell if you have a Spitz naevus or a melanoma, your specialist will recommend the lesion is sent for a second opinion."
I've searched the group for other people who have mentioned having a Spitz naevus but the only recent poster is who I'm 'tagging' into my reply to you. They are still a member of the online community but haven't posted for several years.
It would be really great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it will really help others who might get the same diagnosis. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
