Histology Report

Hi all

I’m confused at my recent diagnosis for malignant melanoma. I didn’t get much by  way of explanation from the dermatologist when I saw him but he did give me my histology report. Mine says the following:

Invasive Malignant Melanoma with superficial spreading

Positive Staining for PRAME ??

Breslow thickness 1.1mm, ulceration not identified, mitotic index: 1 per mm squared.

it says Regression present 0.8mm and stage pT2a …. Which I took to mean stage 2? But on reading on the Internet (Google isn’t always my friend) I don’t know if this is stage1?

it would have been nice to have these explained by a professional at the time but it seems on here lots of us have similar results. Can anyone interpret them pls.

thanks

  • Hi

The 'p' of Stage pT2a stands for pathological. Then T2a refers to the Breslow thickness, which you'll see if you click on the link that T2 means it's between 1mm and 2mm thick. I've forgotten what the 'a' stands for but I am also Stage 2a.

You'll also see clicking here that it says that Stage 2 applies to a melanoma of your thickness which includes ulceration.

I'm afraid I can't help with what regression, the mitotic index and positive staining for PRAME mean but your SCNS should be able to explain all this to you if you give her a call.

  • Thanks so much for replying. So mine says no ulceration so I assume that makes me stage 1? Xx

  • Ah... sorry, I misread that. Yes, that would mean Stage 1 but I don't know what those other parts of your histology report mean and they might also affect the staging.

  • No idea either. You’d think all this would be explained wouldn’t you? Before you are agreeing to WLE and Biopsies. Xx

  • I wasn't told anything about my pathology when I was told I had melanoma either. I only found out all my details afterwards.

I suppose it might be because a lot of people aren't interested in all the ins and outs of their diagnosis or because it makes no difference to the WLE and SLNB you are offered. However, your SCNS should be able to help you understand it all.

  • Yes I think so too - I’ve been assigned one but not heard from her yet. You’ve been a great support today - thank you x
