Mole on back. Looking for reassurance. I’m going out of my mind with worry

Hello. So I have had this mole on my back since I was a child. It’s around 7-8mm. I felt it the other day and it felt slightly raised. I’m unsure as to whether it was always this way. I went to get it checked by GP and she said the only thing she can see is the top is slightly darker than the rest of the mole. (It could have always been like this, when I look at it. It looks no different to me) I went 2 and half years ago for another mole and she looked at that one and told me it was absolutely fine. I’ve had no itching, bleeding, soreness. It hasn’t got irregular borders etc. When I looked on the NHS app the GP sent me for urgent referral but it says the significance is minor. Which has eased my worry a little bit. I’m just wondering if because it has 2 colours that this is most probably melanoma? I have 2 young boy and I’m so scared. I went to get it photographed today and she said I’ll hear within 2 weeks I’ll either be referred back to GP or get a follow up appointment. 2 weeks isn’t long but I feel like it’s going to be the longest 2 weeks ever :(

  • Hi Sophie,

So sorry you're dealing with this stress. It sounds like you've done the right thing by getting it checked quickly, and I think the GPs often do urgent referral for this kind of thing, just in case. I've had a few myself for moles and other dodgy things that have always turned out to be nothing.

Just wanted to reassure you that even if it does turn out to be a melanoma, they're usually caught early, removed and don't cause any more bother for people.

Try not to google stuff - it'll freak you out, and most of the information online is well out of date. Treatments have come along at a phenomenal pace in the last six or seven years. Hopefully, it'll turn out to be a normal mole. I had one urgently referred that looked multicoloured, and they realised that it was just different densities and perfectly fine.

    Sending you a hug.

  • Thank you so much Heart

  • Hi Sophie,

I have just been through this with my husband, nasty looking large mole, scaley, uneven, changing over the last two years, all different colours, and I thought it was definitely melonoma and thankfully when we got the results just over 3 weeks ago all was fine, so it can tick every single box and not be a cancer which is something I've now learnt.

I didn't cope at all, and when they called us back in for the results I nearly died with worry and it was just to check his wound and see his other moles and we were discharged.

I am so grateful for the NHS but this was the longest 8 weeks of my life and I didn't cope at all. It is a stressful horrible process

    • Let us all know how you get on and fingers crossed all is fine! XxSlight frown
