My husband started on Dabrafenib and Trametinib on Saturday and we were just wondering what are people’s experiences with side effects ie what and when can he expect. The doctors told us all the possible side effects but wanted to hear people’s actual experiences if anyone can advise. Thanks.

  • I was on them from Jan 2025 to Feb 2026. Generally didn't have too many bad reactions. Tiredness/Fatigue would come and go. I had small infections in the fat layers which lasted anywhere from 24hrs to 2 weeks which could feel like a bruise, some more painful than others but more annoying than anything else. I craved really sweet things like chocolate even enjoying white chocolate. As soon as I stopped the treatment, the sweet cravings went away.

The only really bad reaction I had was a mild general infection which sent my body into an auto immune response with a very high temperature which I had to have intravenous antiboditcs for and had to stop the medication for a couple of weeks.

I certainly feel that the treatment regime was far less invassive than chemo, radio or even immunology. I stayed completely off alcohol and just tried to rest when I was very tired. I tried to work from home as much as possible, which meant that if I need a quick nap in the day I could just get 20/30 min on the sofa.

Wishing your husband all the best with his treatment.

  • Thankyou for taking the time to reply I will pass this on to my husband.

  • Hi I was on them from November 2023 to end of march 2024 unfortunately I only done 4 months due to side affects and finding thyroid cancer which was successfully treated with surgery. I had side affects about 6 weeks after starting which were high temperature, cough and rash spots o  face and back, I had them paused a couple of weeks then restarted again after 6 weeks I had cough high temperature and liver blood test went to grade 3 toxins. Not everyone gets side affects. I'm still no evidence of disease. I have check ups and scans now. Hope it goes OK for you.

  • Other than a very slight rash I had no side effects and did the full 12 months in 2019.
