I saw my GP 3 weeks ago about a mole on my back that looked suspicious, my GP agreed and referred me to medical imaging, I had this done within 48hrs and since then have heard nothing. My GP gave me tbe number for the referral management team who I phoned today to be told that the earliest I will get an appointment is a minimum of 8 weeks away potentially longer due to the pandemic. I'm not sure I can keep worrying and analysing the what ifs in my head for that long? I guess my question is how long in general did it take to be seen by dermatology for a first appointment? I am in Scotland and have since realised we don't have the official 14 day urgent referral timelines here.
I had my face to face appointment with the dermatologist today (NHS), the appointment was s cancellation so still unsure when I would actually have been seen.
The outcome was they do not believe the suspicious mole to be anything to worry about even though it is 8mm in diameter , has 2 colours and an irregular edge (apparently pigment seepage which is apparently not an actual spread) is not a melanoma and therefore no further action will be taken..
It was suggested that if I am still concerned that I have someone take a photo every 6 months for comparison and to feel free to come back if anything changes but that this was unlikely.
I don't really know what to think, had convinced myself that they would take it off and check to be 100% sure, didn't expect thi outcome.
Hi if I was you I would insist on a biopsy mine was 6mm in diameter two different colours irregular shape 4 times I went trying to get a biopsy each time they told me it's nothing to worry about .. fast forward to now I'm currently on adjuvant treatment for stage 3 melanoma .. it's really worth asking again I wish I had pushed more I believe if had from the start I'd of never of gotten to.stage 3 as they first looked at it 3 years before I finally got it biopsied
Good luck X
Hi
I guess you feel that this is a bit of a two edged sword. On the one hand you're probably pleased to be told that you don't have melanoma but on the other hand you probably wish that they would have biopsied it to find out for sure. You could always ask for a second opinion.
