anyone had pain in their face (like shooting) pain every now and then after mole removed on face. It was removed in August this year. Given the all clear. Now rushed through full scan. Worried sick. Thought it was just post op or nerve pain

  • Hi,

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter has had melanoma requiring surgery to her face. I had melanoma on my cheek and now have a skin graft covering about half of one cheek. It has not been easy. I had a total of three operations to fully remove the melanoma with the required margins and also had a few basal cell carcinomas removed.

Every one of the interventions on my face caused intermittent pain, mini electric shocks, tightness, dragging sensations, stiffness. As time goes by these nerve pains are lessening significantly. Two months after the surgery is early days for your daughter. It takes about 2 years for nerves to mend and there are many nerves in the face.

Having some further tests is a good idea to set your minds at rest. The pain will lessen as the surgery site heals. Gentle massage might help to accelerate the healing process but should be OK'd by her doctor of course.

    I hope this helps

  • Miranda thank you so so so much. We are all pretty certain this is post op pain. Her nurse said this as well. But because the scan come through so quick it has put me in complete panic mode. I’m so sorry what you have experienced- it’s a horrible horrible thing to happen to anyone. Thank you again for this information you have given. I could cry!

  • Hi,

I am very happy to have helped you. My heart goes out to you and your daughter. It is bad enough that skin cancer leaves us with scars. The ongoing pain just seems doubly unfair and of course you can't help wondering what it means.

People with a previous history of cancer are often put to the front of the queue for scans and tests but I wouldn't read anything sinister into that. It could also just mean a lucky cancellation. Once you are in the system it is always easier to get followed up than when you first go to your GP with a problem.

I thought of you and your daughter today. I had a BCC removed from my face last week and had pains on that side of my head all day today. I am not out of the woods either on this story.

It is very hard as a mother to see our children suffer in any way, but I promise that the pain will lessen as time goes by.

    Thinking of you both

  • Thanks again Miranda. I’m so sorry what you’re going through as well.  Our world has been turned upside down this year. It makes all the other problems and grievances you thought you had before, seem completely insignificant-puts everything into perspective. You are so reassuring. I’ve put everything on hold this week because I can’t focus and my mind is so unsettled . She had the scan today. Now the wait again.  Thank you so so much again. Your support and wise words  are very much appreciated.

  • Hello.... I too had a melanoma removed and WLE in March, mine was on my leg. The last 6 weeks I have been experiencing a lot of pain around the original site. I have my 2nd 3 month check on Thursday so will mention it to my SCNS.

I'm hoping it is the nerves knitting back together.

Big hugs to you and your daughter

  • Yes mention it. I’ve been so worried but going through all this with a loved one makes you worry about everything. My daughter had her scan Thursday so now the wait.  I’m sure it’s nerves and blood vessels etc that’s making your leg hurt too. There’s a lot gone on hasn’t it?  She had big skin graft too. I’m calmer than I was before thanks to the support on here but you know what’s it’s like waiting and worrying

    Thank you

  • Hi ,

I hope you got reassuring news from the scan. Thinking of you and your daughter.

    All the best

    Miranda

  • Thank you for asking.  Still waiting for result.  Anxious times
