A bit of background. I had this mole on the left side of my head since I was 16 (I'm 23 now) I think but I never really paid attention to it. Fast forward to the beginning of 2019. I suddenly remember this mole and check it out in the mirror. I was a tiny bit worried because I was very large (about 6mm) and had different colours with the center of it being lighter than the rest and tiiiiiiny bit raised. I saw a GP immediately and she said it looked fine and I shouldn't worry about it but said I should come for a check-up 6 weeks later. 6 weeks pass and I go and see the GP again. She said it looked fine again and there is nothing to worry about. I point out the raised center and she said that it's nothing. I forget about the mole and move on with my life.

Now, 2 months later, I ran my fingers through my hair and noticed a quite noticeable bump on that spot where the mole is. I check in the mirror and the bump in the center has gotten a tiny bit bigger and more raised. I ran to the GP again, she checked it out and said it's 7mm wide but she doesn't think it's anything serious however, she urgently referred me to see a dermatologist to have it inspected further. It's been two weeks and the referral letter has still not been posted. I chased them up and the practice said it should be there soon. I am really really scared that it's something like nodular melanoma and it has gone unnoticed and now it's at an advanced stage. I literally check the mole several times a day trying to seek reassurance. Has anyone had a mole that looked funny (specially with a raised center) and it turned out nothing?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

It's always a very worrying time when you're waiting for a referral but you've done the right thing in going to see your GP and she in turn has also done the right thing in referring you when she noticed that the mole had got bigger.

You say that you've been urgently referred to see a dermatologist but that two weeks later the practice haven't posted the letter! I think you need to speak to the practice manager today about this as an urgent referral means you'll be seen by a dermatologist within 2 weeks not that the practice should post the letter within 2 weeks.

As for whether you have a nodular melanoma or not only an examination by a dermatologist and possible biopsy if they think it needs it will be able to confirm that or not.

It's completely natural to feel scared that you might have melanoma but right now channel that feeling into getting your appointment with a dermatologist.

Let us know how you get on after you've spoken to the practice manager.

  • Hi

I was wondering how you were and if you'd got the date through for your dermatology appointment yet?
