Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma with a Breslow thickness of 1.3mm

I have been advised by my surgeon that I fall into the intermediate category

I’m due to have WLE & SNB in 1 week.

I currently have life insurance with Aviva for critical illness and mortgage protection policy, and they have advised me to go forward with a claim. I have sent my documents which they require etc and they are writing to my consultant etc

My question is has anyone’s had the same or similar  experience to me and had a successful claim.

Many thanks

rebecca

  • Hi Rebecca.

I was diagnosed in June 2017 as stage 1A with a MM of 0.4mm.  I had the WLE and nothing more.

I also had critial illness cover with Aviva and they paid out no trouble at all.  Very straightforward.  I phoned them to make the claim and they then wrote to the hospital requesting histology report, GP referral letter, copy of letter sent back to GP with diagnosis, and that was pretty much it.  The hospital were very slow at providing the information, but did eventually supply it once I starting giving them a nudge.

Claim to payout was about 9 weeks in total.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Denise thank you for your reply.

Thank you for your help. It's given me a little more hope

Money is most definitely not everything but this will help me a lot if my policy pays out.

    Thabks again

Hi I was reading your post as I've just contacted Aviva. Exactly like yours, stage 1a, 0.4mm. Aviva said they don't cover melanoma, only if it has spread to other organs.

Any advice? Maybe they've changed their policy. I took insurance out in Dec 2018.

  • Hi mmat49.

My claim was so straightforward with Aviva with no quibble at all. Have you checked the wording of the policy documents, as that should tell you what cancers they do and do not pay out for.  On my policy it was only MM in Situ that was not covered.

Maybe they have changed their stance on MM as yours was a very recent policy.......mine was taken out in the 90s.

Chck the wording and maybe give Aviva a call back and query it if the policy itself does not clarify it for you.

    Good luck

Hi , that’s very interesting I googled Aviva’s new policy conditions and they do say cancer, excluding less advanced cases, but cover terminal illnesses where death is expected within 12 months. I’ve been on the Macmillan site for over 4 years and people with older policies have paid out but then there was previously no long term remission possible for melanoma.

I didn’t have critical illness cover but do still have life cover, I’m hoping that if aviva make it more difficult to claim critical illness that they make it easier or cheaper to get travel insurance. I always thought it must be difficult to get new insurance/remortgage when moving if they have paid out already on a policy. Sorry mind wandering again.

Yours was a useful post, the info on line is dated 7/2019 so I wonder when they changed you might need to dig out your original paperwork and have a look at it.
