Melanoma 1b

Hi my husband was diagnosed with 1b melanoma and is waiting for wider excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy.

His mole was removed 8 weeks ago, he has at least another 5 weeks for an appointment with the consultant and at least 8 weeks for the next procedure. So will probably be 5-6 months in total.

Does this seem right? He's very anxious about the wait

  • Hi Kasmo,

Sorry to hear about your husband.  I too was diagnosed with a 1b melanoma on my arm 2 years ago.  My time frame was shorter, as I saw the consultant just over a week later and the WLE and SLNB were about 4 weeks after that.  Final results came through after a further 5-6 weeks.  Even then, the waiting was nerve-wracking, so I can absolutely sympathise with you both.

My best advice would be to contact your  SCNS/ Macmillan nurse for a chat, if you have one.  If they know how anxious your husband is about the waiting, they may be able to help, or at least reassure hIm.  Mine is absolutely fantastic.  I remember her saying to me when I was in your position, to remember that the melanoma itself has been cut out, so it can’t do any more damage.

hope you manage to find some reassurance and  help  xx

  • Hi

I was diagnosed with 1b melanoma in 2018 and it actually took me longer to get diagnosed from first visiting the GP than it did for the treatment to be completed. I received my diagnosis in October and had had all my initial consultations, WLE and SLNB plus results of that by the end of December that year. From what I've seen it does seem like wait times for some trusts started to increase after lock down.

I'd probably contact the SCNS specialist as has been suggested to chat this through. If the treatment can't be brought forward, they may be able to offer some reassurance about the time frame given.

All the best to you and your husband. x

  • Thanks we did speak to the Macmillan nurse and we were told the same as you.

Guess we'll just have to wait.

    Thanks for your help

  • Thanks for your help. We spoke to the Macmillan nurse ,she didn't seem concerned about the wait so I think we'll just have to be patient and keep monitoring things
