Hi everyone, I’d really value some opinions. I had a mole assessed at my GPs by the paramedic in June 2025 and was reassured. I was told it was fine and given some advise about what to look for such as itching, bleeding, pussing etc, symptoms that never displayed for me and delayed me going back. In June 2026 it was removed and was diagnosed as 2.0 mm nodular melanoma, and I then needed a wle with skin graft and slnb.
I’m considering making a formal complaint. It sounds like moles getting missed is all too common. I’m wondering whether others have made complaints when things were missed and think it’s worth pursuing and whether anyone has been through something similar.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts or experiences.
In 2013 I had most of my left big toe amputated. A GP had misdiagnosed the acral lentiginous melanoma as fungal toe. For too long as by the time it was amputated there was by then a 15% chance of it spreading. Now, 13 years and 2 surgeries later I am Stage 4 melanoma. I did begin exploring formal proceedings but ultimately decided the whole legal process would be too time consuming and deflecting. However, I had a formal dialogue with the GP and surgery Mgr to try to improve future understanding of the condition. It’s a personal decision re how to proceed but I still feel better that I devoted the 13 years not just to coping with what ensued but also to , wherever possible, enjoying life and family.
I'm so sorry to hear you had to go through that. Thank you for sharing. I hope you are ok.
Your reply has helped me make the decision and I will put in a complaint. Just to engage with my GP at this point. If only to raise awareness.
For me, the missed diagnosis has really effected me and was incredibly hard to get passed.
