Plastic Surgeon Refusing Dermatologist Instruction

Hello. I had Melanoma stage 1a on my leg which had been removed by WLE in 2022. In September a small pink nodule appeared on same leg not far from original WLE scar. After a week it developed to a small ulcer and has grown ever since. Ulcer is currently 15mm wide. Was “fast tracked” to dermatologist at end of October. He wanted to bypass biopsy and have it removed by WLE immediately. Letter to Plastic surgeon advised suspected melanoma or SCC. Had the appointment with Plastic Surgeon today. The most arrogant man I have ever met  Barely sat down and he said he won’t be doing a WLE and won’t touch me until I had had biopsy. Was told that it will be a month or so before biopsy is done. And from past experience it will probably be 3-4 months wait for biopsy results. So allowing all this, I am actually quite scared that this is not being taken seriously. This ulcer has grown from 6mm to 15mm in 4 weeks. What I earth will it be like after a few months. I honestly don’t know what to do. I walked out on him, as I was so upset. Has anyone else gone through this experience? Just the “like it or lump it” feeling comes to mind

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community

I'm sorry to read about your experience when you went to see the plastic surgeon that dermatology had referred you to. It sounds like it was a very difficult appointment to put it mildly.

In your position I would ring my SCNS today, if you haven't already, and explain to them that the plastic surgeon has refused to do the WLE that has been requested. They should be able to look into this for you and sort things out.

Do pop back and let us know how you get on.

    Sending virtual ((hugs))

  • Hello, thank you for your advice. Really appreciate it. I have emailed the dermatologist office and explained the situation. I am so sad about it all, as we should not have to fight to be taken seriously. When I had my melanoma years ago, I was advised to cover it with make up if it bothered me so much. Sometimes I’m just too tired to deal with it. :-(
