So I met with the cancer nurse today. She was lovely but talked about me living with cancer and it really shook me, I kept thinking that can’t be me surely, am I that person? Reality hit home today. Anyway I’m getting a PET scan next week. I feel very nervous about this as I’ve been told the appointment will take two hours. Has anyone any advice as to what to expect? Also five years ago I broke my ankle so I have lots of hardware in my left leg ( where my melanoma was) should I tell them about that.
Hi I had a full body PET scan a few weeks ago.
They ask you lots of questions , which take time so they will check about metal etc and previous operations and conditions.
They will insert a catheter and insert the radio active fluid. They then leave you in a room for a while for the fluid to move round and they want you to relax, they reclined my chair and put the radio on.The actual scan took about 40 minutes. You are placed in position and can't move. Its not as claustrophobic as an MRI.
Once the scan is over they take the catheter out and you can go straight away I was told to stay away from pregnant women and young children for at least 8 hours and to drink lots to flush out my system
Hope that helps. Not as bad as I expected.
Good luck
