I got my results from a lesion removal and they said it was melanoma malugnum in situ and was excised. It was early stage and completely cut out. Why are they taking more out and will I need radiotherapy.
Hi Diamondring
I'm sorry to read that your lesion has turned out to melanoma in situ but the good news is that this is the earliest form of this type of skin cancer and is called in situ because it hasn't invaded the lower layers of the skin.
The reason that your consultant has recommended a wide local excision (WLE) is because this is what is currently recommended by the NICE guidelines. It is to make sure that all the cancer cells have been removed from the excision site. Clicking on the link I've created will take you to the NICE guidelines if you want to read more yourself.
As far as I'm aware, and from my own personal experience, radiotherapy is not usually used in the treatment of any stage of melanoma.
Do You have a date yet for your WLE?
Anne
