I had my biopsy results today, I have two melanomas and three in situ. All on my shin. They are being removed on Wednesday then I’ve been told that they will be sent for staging and I I’ll be called back for WLE, skin graft and SNB. I can’t stop crying, looking at pictures of my toddler granddaughter and thinking I might not see her grow up.

Does anyone know how long the waiting time is following removal until the WLE? I just retired and the family had planned a surprise holiday to celebrate but I know it’s probably unlikely to happen now.

  • I don’t know how long it will take for your staging rexults to come back, but I was told that the wait between staging result  and surgery was 4 to 6 weeks. In fact I was very lucky, and I was offered a hospital  appointment within three weeks to have the WLE and SLNB.  My melanoma was on my arm and was a Stage 1B, 1.8mm in depth. The surgery took place in Merseyside, although I live in Wales

Once you have a meeting with the surgical team, they should be able to give you some sort of idea of the waiting list.

It is a terrible shock, and like you, my thoughts were totally negative when I had my results.  I found my Macmillan nurse really helpful, so if you have been allocated one (or a Specialist skin cancer nurse), they can offer you all sorts of information and advice. I also found it helpful to look at reliable sources of information, such as the Macmillan website and Melanoma Focus, which is excellent.

Hoping for a positive outcome from all this x
