Can't get the diagnosis

Hi,

I am new to this forum but not new to the cancer - had lung cancer removed in February 2019 and do far remained cancer-free. However I spotted a suspicious mole on my back - 3 out of 4 ABCD symptoms. My biggest problem is that I can't get a GP appointment to refer me to the dermatologist. Any advice? Can I self refer? I am worried sick...

.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the group which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

When you say that you "can't get a GP appointment to refer me to the dermatologist" do you mean that you can't get an appointment to see a GP, or that you have seen your GP but he/she won't refer you to a dermatologist?

As far as I'm aware, you can't refer yourself to a NHS dermatology consultant but you can make an appointment to see a consultant dermatologist privately. Have a look at your local private hospitals to see which ones offer dermatology consultations. They usually cost about £200 for an initial consultation.

  • I can't get a GP appointment. I am on the phone at 8 sharp but the line is always busy and when I eventually get through all appointments are gone.

  • That's a pain. Could you explain to the receptionist that you're worried that you might have skin cancer so could you have an emergency appointment?

  • I did. The reply is always the same: try tomorrow. Actually I decided to go the surgery first thing on the morning and try to get an appointment that way. Thank you for your support!
