Waiting on melanoma biopsy result

Hi, I had a biopsy for suspected melanoma taken on 17th December and was told it would be a 6-8 week wait for results. I've been checking my NHS app every day or so and Friday afternoon saw I've got a new appointment with dermatology at the hospital for 6 months time. No other info or letter on the app, I rang the booking line and all they could tell me is it's a follow up. I also rang my doctors and was told they can't see any results yet. I'm understandably stressed, would it be nothing if they've booked a follow up, and if it is something, why the 6 month wait? Our hospital info says they only book a follow up if the doctor thinks it's important to see you again. Appreciate any one elses experience and waiting for results and further appointments. Thanks Slight smile

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the group.

Waiting for results can be a very stressful time and it's natural to want to know what's happening.

By my calculations it's now 8 weeks since you had your biopsy so I'd be inclined to ring the number you should have been given when you had a biopsy to see if your results are back yet.

If you weren't given a number then phone the hospital and ask to be put through to the secretary of the consultant that you originally saw. They should be able to tell you if your results are back yet and how you'll hear, ie hospital appointment, letter, etc. The appointment in August won't be for your results, as it's too far away, and the secretary should also be able to tell you what that's for.

  • Hi thanks for your reply, I actually called this morning and they emailed me the letter, I have/had melanoma in situ and will have another appointment for a wider excision. The 6 month appointment is for another full skin check. So it's better news than I hoped (was anticipating stage 1 or 2 at worse), but still not great knowing it was cancerous! I'm very relieved I caught it early, luckily it was on my arm so very noticeable.
