Hi everyone, I had my WLE and SLNB on the 13th December and was advised by the consultant that pathology are taking 6-8 weeks to get results back.
I have an appointment with the consultant on the 5th February but she said on the day of my surgery that if results were back before then she would phone me.
i today phoned the consultants office and although my results are back I was told that the consultant is too busy to phone people at the moment and I will have to wait until the 5th of February to be told my results at my pre-booked appointment.
the lady I spoke to was very apologetic and explained about there being a shortage of consultants and NHS staff cuts etc. she also said that my consultant is on annual leave next week and another consultant wouldn’t be prepared to see me to give me my results.
i understand all of this and everyone is entitled to time off from work of course but I just feel that the system is so unfair when the results are sitting there and there’s nobody able to tell me what they are.
the lady said that it’s only another 2 weeks to wait but I replied that it might seem like only 2 weeks to some but it feels a lot longer when it’s your biopsy results your waiting to hear which could affect the rest of your life. This is on top of the 5 weeks I’ve already waited.
i know that there are lots of people in a similar position and it’s so frustrating that there’s nothing we can do about it.
Anyone else had the same experience?
Gosh, I understand your frustration as that is so unhelpful. In fact, I think I would be quite cross! Do you have a breast care nurse you can speak to to see if they can expedite information getting to you.
It isn’t something I have experienced but others on here might be able to support better.
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
I was really annoyed at first but quickly realised that I was getting nowhere as it’s the system that’s broken. I was told there are people in a worse position than me as their consultant has left and they have nobody to deliver test results to them.
my surgery was for a melanoma on my arm and a SLNB from my armpit. I’ve spoken to the plastic surgery specialist nurses about it but they aren’t allowed to deliver biopsy results either.
so it’s going to have to be another 2 week wait sadly. Not just for me but my whole family who are worried and hoping for good news.
X
I’m in a very similar position to you. I had a WLE on my upper arm, and a SLNB on December 30. I had a letter today inviting me to an appointment on the 6th of February. I haven’t tried ringing up to see if they have my results. I know the waiting is interminable, but I think I’d rather know my results in a face-to-face consultation, where I can ask questions. As you say, this result is life changing, which ever way it goes.
Having read your email, I’m wondering now whether they do actually have my results, or whether this is just a scheduled appointment five weeks post surgery?
Hi, thanks for your reply.
you are so right that it would be much better to get the results in a face to face meeting rather than on the phone. I suppose I just feel it’s a sad state of affairs that the consultants are so stretched that they have no option but to keep people waiting like this for an appointment. Who knows how that will be resolved.
Wishing you all the best for your appointment on 6th Feb and hope you get positive news.
Bizarrely I too am now in that position following removal of rectal tumour. Surgeon said just over a week for call and results but I get a telephone appointment sent through today for 3 weeks time!
