Hi, I had a WLE on my wrist yesterday - diagnosis from biopsy was stage 1a malignant melanoma. After the biopsy I couldn't drive for about 10 days as it pulled on the wound and stitches. It was about 6cm diagonally across my wrist ending just below the bone.
The Dr I saw at the Plastics consultation for the WLE said that it would be put in a split to avoid pulling as I also ended up holding my arm straight as slight movement pulled, especially around the bone. Although he said he would do the surgery, it was another Dr who said no splint needed.
Just wondering what experience others have had following wrist WLE. Thanks
Hi Think_positive welcome to the forum..So glad to hear surgery us at least last for you but not so good you being left with such confusion re a splint. I'd be tempted to make contact with the unit where you had your op and see if they can offer and advice re this. It may be that one of the lovely folks in this thread may be able to offer up some advice .
Hi Think_positive and a second welcome to the melanoma group.
I was diagnosed with melanoma on my left arm 8 years ago now, so don't have direct experience of having a WLE on my wrist.
I've had a look through the group and have only found one other person who has mentioned having a lesion removed from their wrist. Their username is Cambers 79 so I have 'tagged' them into this reply and hope that they will pop on and tell you how they got on when they had surgery on their wrist.
If you have any concerns about the WLE please get in touch with your SCNS (skin cancer nurse specialist) as they will want to help if you're experiencing problems.
Hi, thank you for the welcome and advice.
The dressing comes off at the weekend so I will see how it's doing and if I need to contact the CNS.
Hi, thank you for your welcome and looking for someone else who had melanoma on their wrist.
The dressing comes off at the weekend so I will see how it's doing and if I need to contact the CNS.
Hi GRANNY59
I had a melanoma removed from my wrist in April 2021. I needed a skin graft due to the size they removed. At the beginning the graft took but it didn’t look pretty but after following the surgeons care instructions it healed well and although my wrist will never look ‘normal’ it looks very good. I call it my shark bite
Thanks Cambers 79
Im glad to hear yours healed well over time, and that you've accepted it. It's hard when it's on show.
I'm lucky as no graft was needed. I'm still waiting to see what the scar looks like as the dressing doesn't come off until tomorrow. The scar following the biopsy was pretty messy so I'm hoping this one will be better as I was sent to the Plastics team for it.
GRANNY59 be prepared for it not to look pretty! But as I said if you follow the guidance and aftercare of your plastics team it will get there in time!
